UKM denies child porn offender Nur Fitri is staff member

PETALING JAYA: Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) has denied that Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin, who was convicted in the UK for child pornography offences in 2015, is a staff member.

The university said Nur Fitri was merely a former student who completed his doctorate in 2021.

“Referring to viral social media posts concerning our former student Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin, UKM would like to explain that he completed his PhD in 2021.

“UKM also denies that Nur Fitri is a staff member. As a higher education institution, UKM is committed to ensuring a conducive and professional environment for all students,” it said in a statement.

Nur Fitri made headlines in 2015 after he was sentenced to five years in prison by a London court while studying at Imperial College London.

He had pleaded guilty to 17 offences involving the possession, production and distribution of child pornography.

Mara subsequently terminated his study loan and ordered him to repay the amount already disbursed.

Nur Fitri later continued his studies at UKM, which defended the decision in 2019, saying he had served his sentence and deserved a second chance.

At the time, UKM said he had shown no suspicious behaviour during his studies and that no complaints had been received about him.
