About The Event.
Scheduled Wastes symbols and GHS (safety) symbols bears some similarities. However, it is also important to take note of their differences. It is found that some Competent Persons or Environmental Practitioners have uses the symbols due to ignorant on the differences. This act has also caused confusion and misunderstanding among the scheduled waste handlers.
Lack of knowledge and understanding on the differences between these two types of symbols has resulted in the symbols being used inter-changeably. Some Competent Persons use the GHS (safety) to design the Scheduled Waste labels. It is also observed that some GHS (safety) symbols are being displayed at the Scheduled Waste Store. Likewise, Safety & Health Officer (SHO) or Occupational Safety & Health Coordinator (OSH-C) and may also inadvertently use the scheduled waste symbols as safety or raw material symbols. Confusion and inability to differentiate between these two types of symbols has caused mis-uses and misunderstanding.
The course covers both the overview of scheduled waste management. It also covers the understanding of scheduled waste, waste characteristics, waste containers and waste non-compliances. Detailed study on Scheduled Waste symbols and labels will be carried out as well as Global Harmonized System (GHS) symbol. Eventually, further study and comparison between the Scheduled Waste and GHS is being discussed and lastly efforts are being placed on study of Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
In conclusion, the participants will understand the difference between Scheduled Waste symbols and labels as compared to Raw material symbols – Global Harmonized System (GHS) symbols and MSDS labels. Detail differentiation between these two types of labels is necessary in order to avoid misuses.
