Theme: “Building a Safe Future: Zero Accidents, Zero Excuses”
DOSH: 5 CEP Points
INTRODUCTION
From January to October 2023, occupational accidents has caused over 6,951 reported cases of injuries while at the workplace according to the 2023 Occupational Accident Statistics Report released by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Ministry of Human Resource.
Of this number, 6,575 workers were afflicted with a Non-Permanent Disability (NPD), 235 workers with a permanent disability (PD), along with 141 deaths bringing it to a total of 6,951 affected workers across all sectors. In comparison, the Occupational Accident Statistics January to October 2022 by DOSH shows over 5,647 workers afflicted with NPD, 204 workers with PD and 172 deaths for a total of 6023 cases.
This ties in with a concerning uptick in accidents, surging from 58,184 in 2021 to a worrisome 75,116 in 2022 according to the 2022 Social Security Organization (SOCSO) Annual report despite the universally acknowledged priority of safety and health in workplaces.
The leading cause of these occupational accidents in 2022 was incidents involving Stepping on, Striking Against, or being Struck by Objects, with a staggering 25,403 reported cases. Working at Height followed closely behind, contributing to 21,747 incidents.
This data underscores the immediate need for a renewed focus on workplace safety to reduce the frequency of occupational injuries. Employers and employees must collaboratively address the surge in accidents, implementing proactive measures to mitigate risks and ensure a secure working environment. These statistics call for collective efforts to instil a culture where safety takes precedence in our professional landscapes.
