JOHOR BAHRU: A colourful Mid-Autumn Festival scene drawn by Guowei will soon find its way into homes across Malaysia – not simply as a piece of art, but as the face of a fundraising effort for children and adults with special needs.

Guowei, a resident of Pertubuhan Kebajikan Insan Istimewa Johor Bahru (JB Sayang), created the artwork featured on the cover of the centre’s charity mooncake gift box.

Filled with colour and lively details, his illustration reflects his idea of reunion, happiness and hope. For the centre, it also offers members of the public a glimpse of the imagination and creativity that can flourish when individuals with special needs are given encouragement and opportunities to express themselves.

This Mid-Autumn Festival, the organisation hopes the artwork will help raise funds for the education, training and daily needs of 42 individuals under its care, as well as the centre’s operating expenses.

“Many companies prepare gift boxes for their clients, partners and employees, while families exchange mooncakes with relatives and friends. This year, we hope that these good wishes can also become a source of support for children with special needs,” the centre said in a statement.

The gift box contains four 170g traditional baked mooncakes: white lotus paste with a single egg yolk, jade lotus paste with a single egg yolk, golden custard, and matcha with black sesame.

Each box is priced at RM138, while two boxes are available for RM238. Buyers may collect their orders directly or arrange delivery nationwide, at RM10 for up to two boxes within West Malaysia and RM15 per box to East Malaysia.

Pre-orders are now open, with collection and deliveries beginning in September. Quantities are limited.

The campaign will help JB Sayang continue providing educational activities, rehabilitation, meals, personal care and everyday necessities. Its residents have varying levels of need, with some able to take part in lessons and creative activities while others require assistance throughout the day.

Founded 17 years ago, the centre offers long-term care to individuals with conditions including autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and mobility impairments. It relies heavily on donations to meet costs such as food, utilities, therapy, diapers, rent and staff salaries.

According to the centre, each mooncake purchase is an investment in the residents’ ability to continue learning and growing in a supportive environment.

As for Guowei, the campaign allows something personal to travel beyond the centre’s walls.

His drawing will become part of festive gatherings and gifts exchanged among colleagues, friends and loved ones – carrying with it the story of the artist who created it.

To ensure timely delivery, please place your orders by Sept 1.
