Cops probing for negligence, sabotage in Sunway roller-coaster case
SHAH ALAM: Police are investigating possible elements of negligence or sabotage in the Sunway Lagoon roller-coaster incident that left 10 people injured.
Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar said the probe is being conducted with the cooperation of other technical agencies, including the fire and rescue department and state occupational safety and health department (DOSH).
Shazeli said two victims are still being treated in hospital but are not in serious condition. The others only received outpatient treatment.
“The roller-coaster has been temporarily closed to allow for investigations at the scene,” he said at a press conference here.
He added that statements will be taken from theme park workers, the ride’s operator and the victims.
The incident occurred at about 9pm on Saturday and involved 22 local and foreign visitors aged between 11 and 44. No deaths were reported.
Sunway Group founder Jeffrey Cheah previously said the incident might have been caused by metal fatigue.
Earlier, Selangor DOSH said it believed the roller coaster experienced a “sliding failure” before coming to an abrupt stop, based on preliminary investigations. The malfunction then triggered the automatic emergency braking system.
